Maine is the biggest of the New England States (as big as all other New England States together), in the farthest northeast of the United States with a beautiful landscape.

Most of the coast is not accessible however, because it is in private property. Only two percent of the coast belongs to the state of Maine. Numerous islands lie along the coast. The biggest island is Mount Desert Island with the Acadia National Park on it. The difference between ebb and flow is nowhere bigger than in Maine: in Passamaquoddy Bay the altitude difference reaches 8.5 meters.
The capital Augusta has a population of 20.000 inhabitants, but biggest city is Portland. Tourism is almost settled at coastal-areas, especially during summer. The more one enters the interior, the more wilderness appears.

At first Maine was private property before its union with Massachusetts in 1677. As a result of the Missouri Compromise, Maine was separated from Massachusetts to be established as the 23rd state in 1820.
Portland as biggest city with a famous port has a population about 70.000 inhabitants. North of Portland begins what tourists' draws to Maine: the Atlantic coast with beautiful bays, an almost unspoiled countryside and picturesque fishing villages. The northern coast of Maine is known for its wild beauty.

80 percent of the state is wooded. There are 2.200 lakes with countless banks and still more ponds; 5.000 rivers and mountains and valleys.
Alt least 63 lighthouses are at the coasts of Maine.
